This will be the second season for Josef Cerny at the WorldTour level. Cerny is a former double Czech National Champion, after winning both the road race and the individual time trial in 2018. He jumped onto the professional scene in 2013 as a rider of a CCC-sponsored team and did it in style by finishing 2nd in one of the stages at Giro del Trentino and wore the leader’s jersey for one day. He proved his potential later on, winning Visegrad 4 Bicycle Race – GP Czech Republic, the general classification of Czech Cycling Tour, and Okolo Jižních Čech.
Outside of winning two national titles, his 2018 season was marked with multiple top 5 overall performances in stage races, including second place at CCC Tour – Grody Piastowskie, second at A Travers Les Hauts De France, third at Tour du Loir et Cher E Provost, and in Ronde de l’Oise, and fifth at Tour of Slovakia.
I knew I wanted to be a professional cyclist when…
There was never that one moment in which I decided to become a pro. As a kid I played hockey in the winter and rode a bike in the summer. I was combining those two disciplines until I turned 14 and then I realized that cycling and being outside is much more fun.
My greatest racing memory is…
Every time I win a race and can raise my hands in the air is special.
The race I dream of winning is…
Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix. These are legendary races in which you have to be 100-percent ready. I also like cobbles, especially when the form is at its peak.
If I wasn’t a professional cyclist, I would be…
I always wanted to be a professional rider, so I can’t imagine myself doing something else.
