The five-man breakaway of the day, which went clear shortly after the start, established a maximum lead of four minutes before the peloton, with CCC Team’s riders, started pulling them back with 70 kilometers to go.
After the last categorized climb of the race, the leaders’ advantage was down to two minutes and eventually, they were caught with five kilometers remaining.
In the finale, CCC Team did a great job of moving up to the front of the bunch to set up the team’s sprinter, Mareczko for the finish.
Thanks to that good team effort the Italian was well-positioned for the final, sharp corner with 300 meters to go and after avoiding a crash that happened on the wet and slippery road, he took fifth place on the line, behind stage winner, Pascal Ackermann (BORA – hansgrohe).
Enric Mas (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) claimed the overall win and Gijs Van Hoecke was CCC Team’s best-placed rider on the General Classification after six days of racing.
Quotes from the Finish Line
“Today our guys did a great job in the finale, pulling at the front of the peloton and positioning me perfectly for the sprint. I was quite lucky in the end as one rider slipped next to me almost taking me down too but, I was able to stay upright and contest the sprint. That crash disrupt my finish a little bit since it opened a small gap and even though I felt good it was hard to close it. Overall, I’m happy with the way I ended the season as I go home healthy with three top-ten spots claimed at the WorldTour race so, I can start the off-season in a good mood and motivated.”
