CCC Team Sixth on Opening Team Time Trial at the UAE Tour

CCC Team was one of the last to roll down the ramp, and as all seven riders settled into a strong and consistent rhythm, they were chasing the benchmark of 16’49” set by eventual winners, Team Jumbo-Visma.

On the exposed, coastal course, CCC Team was able to maintain good form, going through the intermediate checkpoint after ten kilometers with the provisional fourth-fastest time (11’14”) before the team’s first five riders powered across the finish line in 17’13”.

With three teams still to finish, CCC Team had slipped down the leaderboard slightly by the end of the stage however, they still finished in a very respectable sixth place in what was the team’s first team time trial as CCC Team.

Quotes From the Finish Line

Patrick Bevin:

“We’re pretty happy with our result today. The first TTT is always very nervous, but even with some mistakes, and in some very good company, we finished sixth. The course itself was deceivingly hard, but we were able to keep our composure which was important especially as we had to change plans a little out on the road. Overall, I think today’s performance bodes well for what is ahead.”

Jakub Mareczko:

“The team time trial was a good way to start the UAE Tour. It was also nice to be part of the team’s first TTT of 2019. It was a fast course, and there were definitely some things that we could have done better, but overall we worked well together. For me, tomorrow will be the first chance here to go for the sprint, and I think we can take confidence with how we rode together today going into that. I’m feeling good. My shape is there so I’m motivated to see what I can do.”

Sports Director, Jackson Stewart:

“I think we can be really happy with our performance today. As a team, we’re all still fairly new to one another, so we’re still learning how to race together in this discipline and we made some mistakes today, but I’m really encouraged by what I saw. If we take the little things we did wrong today and learn from them, I think we could go five to ten seconds faster.”
“It’s a super competitive field here with a lot of teams bringing their best riders, and so, I think we’ve had a promising start to the race. Overall, we have a really good group of riders here with stages that can suit everyone, and that starts tomorrow with Mareczko.”
